What is Housing First?
Housing First is a homelessness solution that quickly connects people to permanent housing. It differs from more traditional homeless services which provide emergency shelter or temporary housing with significant eligibility constraints (e.g., sobriety, employment, program participation, etc.).
The concept of Housing First was developed in 1999, and has since been demonstrated by numerous studies as the most effective approach to resolving homelessness. The model has gained popularity with service providers across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Despite its growing base of evidence, Housing First still does not have much name recognition beyond the nonprofit community.
HousingFirst Lab works with housing and homeless agencies that embrace Housing First principles to amplify and expand their impact. For those who want to learn more, we created an infographic about the basics of Housing First.
